A VISIT to hospital can be a scary experience for a young child, even if mum or dad is on hand
with comfort and cuddles. But thanks to the work of volunteers at Bridport Community
Hospital, there is now a whole army of knitted trauma teddies to make it better.
The hospital hit upon the idea of leaving a teddy knitting pattern in the outpatients
department for people to take away. Using oddments of wool these kind but largely anonymous
knitters have provided the hospital with a supply of around 100 small, brightly-coloured
bears for the children to take home.
Outpatients nurse Pauline Wykes said: 'The bears are really helpful if, for
example, I have to take a child's blood and they are frightened. They are a real distraction
for them.
'They can also help if mum has to come in for an obstetrics scan and her youngsters are
getting bored.'
WHAT A HANDFUL: Outpatients nurse Pauline Wykes with just some of the
bears
Matron Heather Purse added: 'I would like to say a big thank-you to a number of
unknown people who over recent months have knitted so many teddies for children who attend the
minor injuries unit.
'From a very basic pattern we have received a vast range of colourful and varied teddies,
all with bright smiley faces. These teddies can be used to explain treatments to the children
- so teddy might get a plaster on his leg or a dressing on a "wound" on his face.'
Each child is given a new teddy and takes it home - they are not left in the hospital for
other children to play with.
