The TOS (UK)’s activities include raising funds and making donations to
various causes and taking an active part in various service activities locally.
So what has it achieved?
When the tsunami struck on Boxing Day in 2004, funds were sent
immediately to Adyar, India for relief work and for the cost of a water purification
plant in Sri Lanka. Colin Price, National President of the
Theosophical Society in England and Cornelia Crowther were in Adyar
at that time. We contacted Colin who withdrew the cash from his own
account to pay for the relief work. He was reimbursed on his return from the
TOS (UK) account. We are very grateful to Colin for his prompt action.
Many members and sympathisers contacted us, concerned as to how they could help. Much
money was raised and sent to relief work at Adyar and for relief elsewhere.
TOS (UK) generally has a table of goods for sale at the Theosophical Society
headquarters at 50 Gloucester Place, London and also at all major Theosophical
Society events elsewhere - please donate those unwanted presents! The TOS (UK)
AGM is usually held at the Theosophical Society's Summer School, and this
is when funds are disbursed, although some funds are set aside each year for
emergency relief.
Donations and bequests are welcomed.
Many TOS and TSmembers and friends are especially involved in the
"Teddies for Tragedies"
project - very small children who have to go into hospital recover much better if they
are given a teddy to cuddle - we pass the teddies on to the organisers of this scheme.
Christmas Boxes: TOS and TS Members and friends especially in
the North West Federation of the Theosophical Society in England fill
empty Shoe Boxes with various items
such as toiletries, chocolate, etc. and wrap them up as presents to hand out to the
homeless and old people all over the world. If you want to know more, please get in
touch.
There were several other major fundraising events in 2006 -
please help to organise more this year too!
A Concert on the themes 'Mysticism and the Music of Arvo
Part' by Rustom Pomeroy(violin) and Alisdair Hogarth (piano) at
50 Gloucester Place on the evening of 17 September 2006 raised £208
towards TOS funds. Rustom has been studying music since the age of
three, has his own quartet 'Eclipse', has appeared at Wembley
Stadium and on TV backing such musicians as McFly, Katie Melua
and Alison Moyet. Alisdair made his debut at the Wigmore Hall, London
at the age of 15 and both have played all over the world with major
orchestras. Our grateful thanks to Rustom and Alisdair for offering
their services for free and to Cornelia Crowther for arranging this
very successful event.
A Christmas Concert at 50 Gloucester Place, on the evening
of Sat. 2 December 2006, featured tenor Frank Harvey, soprano
Sylvia Kopeczi and pianist Donald Roots performing works by
Handel, Puccini and Al Jolson. There was also a TOS stall and
a raffle. A sum of £365 was raised towards TOS funds. Our grateful thanks to
Frank, Sylvia and Donald for offering their services for free
and to Cornelia Crowther for arranging this very successful event.
