OUR TEDDIES HAVE STRUCK A GLITCH!
We are very fortunate that our teddies are transported abroad free of charge by two International Charities, International Aid Trust and Furniture for Education Woldwide. They do so by placing the teddies in the spaces in the containers in between their own donations.
To send a container costs them over £5,000. They are finding it hard to do so on a regular basis.
One of them has asked us not to give them any more teddies at present. The other, although willing to accept teddies have said that they can only do so in small numbers.
This means that we cannot shift large numbers of teddies as we used to do.
We are therefore asking our kind knitters to stop knitting teddies in large numbers, unless they have another avenue which will accept them. Children's wards in local hospitals can be a good avenue.
We thank our teddy knitters for all their efforts. We shall inform you if the situation changes.
Theosophical Order of Service,
Teddies Make the News!
Jacqueline Wakefield*, daughter of the late
Albert Sutcliffe who was the President of
Bradford Theosophical Society, knitted 32 teddies over the
2007 Christmas Period and was bringing them to our home. We thought that it would
be a good opportunity to get some publicity. So we contacted the local newspaper, the
Bradford Telegraph & Argus (T&A).
They sent a photographer who took photos of the three of us surrounded by the Teddies. The
photo with a caption describing Teddies for Tragedies and the
TOS was published in the T&A.
The item elicited considerable interest and we were contacted by several T&A
readers asking for knitting patterns and offering to knit the Teddies.
Mrs Bessie Lay has knitted 829 Teddies!|
Mrs Ann Hirst has knitted 656 Teddies!
Margaret Limeburn and Patricia Valentine and their friends of the Swillington Craft Club, Leeds have knitted 619 Teddies!
Mrs Brenda Ortori has knitted 548 Teddies!
The Ladies of Denholme Rural Crafters have knitted
TOS members in Italy came to know of this scheme via the
internet and adopted it. They have sent us 197 teddies by post!
Thank you very much. We appreciate your efforts greatly.

* Jacqueline has now completed 50
Teddies! (10 Sept. '08)|
The Ladies of Shipley Hall Royd Fellowship have knitted
15 tedies most of which were knitted by an incredible lady of
96 who loves to think that her Teddies have given comfort to some
children somewhere in the world!|
We have collected 5,352 Teddies to date in Bradford!
We would like to thank all the wonderful readers of Bradford T&A
who have knitted and continue to knit Teddies for Teddies for Tragedies.
Teddies for Tragedies:
Many members of TOS-UK and the TSand their families knit
Teddies on a regular basis. At the initiative of TOS-UK Chair,
Maureen Atkinson the sixth form girls at
Westholme School, Blackburn have been encouraged to knit Teddies.
Mrs Pamela Martin head of her year, as well as her other
duties, teaches knitting and encourages the school to work together for the benefit of others.
Mrs Grundy who is in her eighties, the mother of one of
the staff has knitted over 200 Teddies, each one different.
Maureen goes to the school every year to speak to the
girls about the TOS and receive the Teddies. The girls are
thanked and the school receives a certificate.|
TOS-UK member, Harvey Tordoff
has persuaded his family to knit Teddies. They have knitted hundreds!|
